The ear is the most prominent protrusion on the side of the head so the clay wall installation will begin there.

A small two-inch slab of clay is pressed in behind the ear. The sculpture was completed in a medium hardness oil-based clay and has a much harder surface compared to the soft WED Clay so applying pressure to stick the softer clay will not harm the sculpture.

Looking at the parting wall from the rear you can see that one side is complete and that in order to fill in behind the ear, small pieces of WED Clay had to be inserted into the gaps. Also notice that there is a clay buttress added at the top of the head to reinforce the wall.

More clay triangles are cut and added to the rear of the clay wall to reinforce it.

The clay wall now extends from shoulder to shoulder and the final reinforcements are added to give the wall extra strength.
