Alginate, Alginates and Moulage

Alginate, Alginates and Moulage

Today's life casting Alginate Impression Material (alginates) is derived from dental impression material, but distinguished by slower setting times. EnvironMolds offers two groups of alginates. Read About How Alginate is Made.

The first group of alginates is a silica free formula which is both environmentally and user friendly. This alginate has a softer set, ideal for babies and small children as it is very gentle on the model. The silca free formula alginate provides a much greater coverage as its mix ratio is 1 part powder to 7 parts water, making it the most economical alginate formula on the market by volume.

The second type of alginate is the traditional formula which provides for a firmer set due to its clay fillers. But the traditional alginate formula has the classic mix ratio of 1 part powder to 3 parts i has lesser coverage by pound than the silica-free alginate family.

EnvironMolds also offers Fibergel alginate which contains fiber to both alginate improve tear strength and to hold moisture to delay shrinkage. This is an excellent alginate formula for larger molds and lifecastings.

Alginates are known as waste molds as they usually only can be used for one, perhaps two castings as alginate shrinks through time as the water evaporates. Thus, you should cast into your alginate mold within 3-hours for best results. The exception being FiberGel alginate which allows for a twelve hour delay before shrinking. Read about alginate in the Art Casting Journal.

We also offer Moulage, similar to alginate, but is heated to melt it and then applied to the subject. After use moulage can be remelted and reused.

For for more information on selecting the correct alginate product and the correct amounts please read the Alginate Selection Table.
