    Today's life casting alginates evolved from dental formulations known as dental impression material. In fact, the alginate definition is referred to as impression material in dentistry. However, alginates are also widely used in the medical field for dressings and wound care and also in the food industry as a food supplement.

  6. DIY Agar-Moulage for Life Casting

    Moulage is the French word for molding . But it is also the name for a popular reusable mold making product. It is made in part from agar agar, which is extracted from seaweed. Moulage brand mold making material is an old-timey formula evolved from a reversible hydrocolloid impression material. More importantly it is a reusable and skin-safe in which the solid material is heated until it melts and then applied to the skin or poured into a mold box. Agar agar formulas have been popular dental mold making materials for almost a century. It was developed in Austria in 1925, and has been used in dentistry until dental alginate impression materials became widespread.

    Last week I received a call from Don Carlson asking about a clay that wouldn't melt under hot studio lights yet can be softened and manipulated for his animation work. We had a long discussion of possibilities and a series of emails followed. I wound up sending him a sample clay kit by Chavant which might fit the bill. But as we continued our correspondence I learned that Don's questions weren't coming from a man with just casual knowledge of clay. He in fact had studied clays and their components and had actually written a book on the subject.
