Peter Nagel an Angola, New York lifecaster began his career as a die maker with Ford Motor Company. Although he received no formal sculpture training, his education and life experiences have magically lent themselves to his current artistic love - the joy of lifecasting. Nagel attended the University of Buffalo where he trained in foundry casting and various courses in figure drawing.

Finding himself frequently laid off from Ford he discovered  that he had lots of time but little money. The result was the inspiration that began his adventure into sculpting small figures in terra cotta. At first it was an inexpensive hobby. But over time he began entering his work in various shows winning first prize in almost every show.

Nagel was reluctant at first to part with his work as his wife was using his  figurative work as decorations. But he relenting after family and friends pursued him to market his work. Soon Nagel began making molds to reproduce his work. But he found that the fun was ebbing due to the repetitive demands of casting and painting each piece. Originality was missing.

Then he discovered leather as a casting medium. He first experimented on a bust of Ralph Waldo Emerson  that he had sculpted. When he saw a show on TLC featuring lifecasting he decided to try to marry leather to a torso casting. The results can be seen on the pages.

Nagel is a Member of the Association of Lifecasters International.
