The German design firm ART+COM, was commissioned to create a signature art installation for the Departure-Check-in hall of Terminal 1 at Singapore Airport. “Kinetic Rain” is composed of two parts, each consisting of 608 rain droplets made of lightweight aluminum covered with copper. Suspended from thin steel ropes above the two opposing escalators, each droplet is moved precisely and seemingly floating by a computer-controlled motor hidden in the halls ceiling. The drops follow a fifteen minute, computationally designed choreography where the two parts move together in unison, sometimes mirroring, sometimes complementing, and sometimes responding to each other.

The moving sculpture was installed in early July 2012 spans an area of 75 square meters (810 sf) and a height of 7.3 meters (24 ft.). It has been billed as the world's largest kinetic sculpture. Each copper-plated aluminum raindrop weighs 180 grams (6.3 oz.) and is suspended by a thin wire. Computer-controlled motors attached to the wires can move each raindrop up and down independently, and thereby make the elements form elaborate moving shapes. The Weight of overall installation is 2.4 tons. The installation is programmed to make the elements change into sixteen different shapes during its fifteen minute loop, including flight-related shapes such as airplanes, kites or hot air balloons.

Kinetic Rain was created over a period of two years by artists, animators and programmers from the German design firm Art+Com. Its cost has not been made public.According to Art+Com, the sculpture "aims to be a source of identity for its location, and provides a moment for passengers to contemplate and reflect."
